Fast, affordable broadband took a major step forward today with the launch of the Auckland City Wi-Fi service across seven key zones of the Auckland CBD and fringe.
Auckland City Wi-Fi is the result of a public-private partnership between the Auckland City Council, Kordia (one of New Zealand’s leading providers of broadcast and telecommunications networks and network services) and Tomizone (Australasia’s largest provider of Wi-Fi services.)
RoamAD’s multi-radio wireless nodes have received Taiwanese NCC Type Approval following successful commercial deployment in Taiwan
Auckland, NEW ZEALAND—December 18, 2008—RoamAD today announced the general availability of its converged wireless network solutions for the Taiwanese market following the grant of NCC Type Approval earlier this month.
The network, launched by Auckland mayor John Banks last week, promises return-on-investment from cost-savings from reduced crime — including policing costs, insurance premiums and repairs — as well as allowing service providers to sell wi-fi access to end-users or provide wi-fi to the public for free.

The Hamilton Business District Committee’s free wireless initiative won a national award at the recent Australian Telecommunications Users Group’s annual awards ceremony.
The wireless@beaumont initiative is a free Wi-Fi hotzone funded by both banner advertising and local businesses and covers the Beaumont Street area of the CBD in Hamilton, Newcastle, Australia. The wireless network has been operational for 20 months and weekly logins exceed 1,000.
Nokia has joined forces with Kordia to offer free Wi-Fi access for Nokia Nseries users at Kordia Metro WiFi locations across New Zealand.
Kordia Metro WiFi is powered by RoamAD and provides wireless ‘hot-zones’ across target areas such as cafes, CBDs, university campuses and shopping precincts in urban areas all over New Zealand.
Nokia NZ Marketing Manager Lane Stephens believes that Nokia’s partnership with Kordia will be of real benefit to all Nseries users.
The city is working through contract terms and access models with Kordia to begin delivering services, says Auckland City Council.
Auckland City Council is working with preferred supplier Kordia to get two wi-fi zones operational which will act as pilots for a larger rollout later this year.
RoamAD partner Kordia™ has signed a Heads of Agreement with the Auckland City Council to deploy a Metro Wi-Fi network throughout the Auckland CBD, main streets and CBD fringe.
This follows a ‘request for information’ issued earlier this year.
“There were obvious synergies between the wholesale model the Council wanted for its public Wi-Fi network, and the deployments Kordia™ is already making in partnership with RoamAD in Auckland and elsewhere,” says Kordia™ CEO Geoff Hunt.
