Solid Commercial Business Model Wins Australian Community Broadband Award

The Hamilton Business District Committee’s free wireless initiative won a national award at the recent Australian Telecommunications Users Group’s annual awards ceremony.

The wireless@beaumont initiative is a free Wi-Fi hotzone funded by both banner advertising and local businesses and covers the Beaumont Street area of the CBD in Hamilton, Newcastle, Australia. The wireless network has been operational for 20 months and weekly logins exceed 1,000.

Wireless@beaumont won the prestigious National Broadband Award – Community Category, and came runner-up for Best Communications Solution – Regional Award for 2008.

After a highly-competitive review process, ATUG’s judges concluded that wireless@beaumont stood out with a solid commercial business model and programmed rollout. The judges commented that wireless@beaumont offered a unique wireless solution, webcam support, video surveillance, information terminals and a marketing portal for the businesses of Hamilton.

The RoamAD powered Wi-Fi network was supplied by aCure Technology, the company behind the acclaimed metromesh network in Perth.
